An 11-year-old boy was shot to death Monday afternoon in north Minneapolis’ Folwell Park, police say.

Officers responded after getting reports of gunfire a little after 2 p.m. in the park, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said.

A short time later, a resident near the intersection of Morgan and Dowling avenues said he heard cries for help and found the 11-year-old boy in front of his house with at least one life-threatening gunshot wound.

The boy was with another male of an unknown age, O’Hara said. The resident began driving the injured boy in his vehicle to the hospital. On the way, the man located a police lieutenant at the intersection of Dowling and Penn avenues and pulled over. The lieutenant pulled the injured boy from the vehicle and started CPR.

Fire and emergency medical workers responded as well. Despite their efforts, the boy died at the scene, O’Hara said.

The boy was shot in the park’s driveway, and the shooting is believed to be connected to people in one or more vehicles that were driving through the park, O’Hara said.

“There’s a report that at least one of them were driving across the grass in the park, and then at some point a shooting ocurred directly behind me in the driveway,” O’Hara said.

There have been no arrests, and police are still investigating to determine what led to the shooting.

“I cannot emphasize [enough] how terrible it is to have an 11-year-old boy shot during the day and killed,” O’Hara said.

The department has not disclosed what the relationship was between the boy and the other person with him when he was found injured.

O’Hara asked anyone with information to contact police.

“We are making a plea: Please, anyone who was here, to come forward and provide information, even anonymously, to help us bring some sense of justice to this child’s family,” O’Hara said.

This was the city’s 26th homicide of 2025, according to a Star Tribune database.
