Douglas: Weather boomerang … near 50 again Monday

Nothing timid about our weather. The seven-day temperature trend resembles the EKG gyrations of a meteorological heart attack. Last week MSP saw 110 consecutive hours with a windchill below zero. A week ago the high was minus 2. Today we should see 50s. Factoring windchill, Monday may feel as much as 85 to 90 degrees warmer than it did a week ago.

And here we are, groveling for snow. Well, a few of us are. Six months ago, a developing La Nina cool phase of the Pacific led us to believe that this winter would be colder than usual. In spite of a mild start, that is how things are working out. We thought snowfall might be above average, too. Nope. The main storm track has been too far south, the sweet spot for heavy snow a few hundred miles south and east of home.

No significant snow, but a little rain may fall Monday night and again Wednesday and Friday. Weird for late February, but here we are.

Is winter over? Not even close. But models show highs in the 30s and 40s for the next two weeks. I see a very predictable “Muddy Vortex” for March.
