SANTA FE, N.M. — Monsoon rains in southern New Mexico triggered flash flooding that killed three people and was so intense an entire house was swept downstream in a mountain village that is a popular summer retreat.
A man, a 4-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy were swept away Tuesday by floodwaters, the village of Ruidoso said in a statement. The village is about 130 miles (210 kilometers) southeast of Albuquerque.
The three who died were the same three people who had been reported missing, according to Kerry Gladden, the public information officer for Ruidoso. There were no other reports of people missing as of Wednesday morning, Gladden said.
Search and rescue crews were out Wednesday morning in places that had been hard to reach before dark on Tuesday evening, she said.
''Our hearts are broken for the families who have lost their loved ones in this terrible tragedy,'' Mayor Lynn Crawford said in a statement. "We are united in our sorrow and our commitment to supporting one another as we face this devastating loss together.''
Dozens of swift water rescues
Emergency crews completed at least 85 swift water rescues in the Ruidoso area, including of people who were trapped in their homes and cars, said Danielle Silva of the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
The water receded by Tuesday night and search and rescue and swift water rescue teams scoured the town as public works crews cleared debris from the roadways. Some cars were left stranded in the mud.
