An argument over an unpaid debt allegedly led a Brooklyn Park man to shoot and kill a 43-year-old man from Minneapolis who was dating his girlfriend’s mother, according to criminal charges filed in Hennepin County District Court this week.

Marvel Galvaston Williams, III, 20, was charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Rico Ronondo Rodriguez. Williams is being held on $1 million bail.

According to the charges:

Police were called to an apartment building in the 1100 block of James Avenue N. at 10:30 p.m. Jan. 9. They were met by a woman who said Rodriguez was her boyfriend. He was on the floor of her apartment and had died at the scene.

The woman said Rodriguez was shot by Williams, who is dating her daughter. The mother said after the shooting her daughter fled with Williams in a white Subaru. The shooting was allegedly over unpaid money to Williams' sister, who had come over earlier in the day to braid a child’s hair at the house.

The mother said Williams and Rodriguez argued outside the apartment before Williams fired one shot and hit Rodriguez in the neck. Police found blood inside and outside the apartment and one 9-millimeter casing at the scene.

Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from the area that showed Williams getting out of a white Subaru and trying to get the attention of someone inside the apartment building for about five minutes. He then went around to the back of the apartment and, after a little over a minute, is seen running toward his car.

Galvaston has no criminal convictions in Minnesota. He had two separate cases of disorderly conduct and domestic abuse dismissed on the same day last year. His next court date is set for Feb. 12.
